My life has not been easy, like many others my life has been a journey filled with struggle and filled with hurdles but I have ran my journey alone most of the way and I am here today to tell you all about it.
Not many people know my story, not because I am ashamed of it, but because I am still trying to understand it. I am a survivor of domestic violence, sometimes my voice will still shake when telling my story. I am a strong woman who fought for my children to come home through the courts system and I raise my children as a single mother.
I've worked hard in instilling confidence within myself but also my children. How does this relate to the business I created? Here's how.
Sometimes in life we all just need someone to stand beside us and hear us, hear our struggles and hear our voice. As an Indigenous woman I have lived first hand like many others before me through hurdles, through stereotypes and broken down barriers. It was not an easy road and still is not an easy road but it is one I can proudly own and claim as my own story.
Barra-gi creates a supportive community network around our participants for many reasons, but the main reason is due to lack of support within the workforce. Many businesses lack empathy for Indigenous people and the struggles faced on a daily basis. By building a supportive network we create a community that will provide a safe space to speak and to be heard.
We sit with our participants to understand their story and create their network to assist in building their employment journey and break down barriers together.
Once they open the window into their world we are able to see a little of what they see, without communication we are just looking into their world and we only see what they want us to see. By communicating we open up a platform to communicate and ask questions without judgement. By asking questions and understanding we're able to know a little more and how we can help. Communicating and being transparent is something that is high on our priority list at Barra-gi and we're committed to both.
I can only speak for myself, but I love communicating, I enjoy communicating with people to learn, to share and to understand. Sometimes it is tricky, but I would rather stay and help, nurture and build and watch amazing things happen. You know that saying, from little things, big things grow? Well I believe this, and planting a seed of positive energy is just the beginning.
